How to clean Composite Decking

If you’ve recently installed composite decking in your garden, you’ll be happy to know that with the right maintenance, this flooring can last up to 20 years.

Better yet, composite decking is one of the easiest decking materials to clean, perfect for a busy home. However, a few key steps must be followed to ensure your composite remains in great condition for years to come.

Today, WPS Handrails will walk you through how to clean your composite decking so you can enjoy a beautiful patio area free from grime.

Why is Regular Cleaning Necessary?

Like any other material, composite decking isn’t insusceptible to general wear and tear and dirt.

Your decking area is frequently exposed to harsh weather conditions, debris, mildew, and muddy shoes, so it’s only necessary that you give your composite decking some TLC from time to time.

This will help to prevent discolouration, stains, and weakened composite boards.

How Often Should You Clean Composite Decking?

We recommend giving your composite decking a thorough cleaning every few months to maintain its condition.

This will help you keep on top of fallen garden matter, preventing a build-up of dirt and grime. Setting aside an hour or so toward a cleaning schedule every few months is better than having to splurge on repairs or replacements!

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Soft-bristle brush/broom
  • Garden hose or pressure washer
  • Washing bucket
  • Mild soap or composite decking cleaner
  • Sponge or mop

Top tip: Avoid cleaning your decking on a windy day when debris is more likely to settle on the surface. Instead, opt for a sunny day so the composite boards dry quicker.

Step 1- Remove any Debris

First things first, debris such as twigs, leaves, and dirt needs to be swept away to create a smooth surface for cleaning.

This will prevent scratches on the surface when scrubbing the composite decking. Use a putty knife to remove trapped debris in hard-to-reach spots, such as between cracks in the boards.

Step 2- Pre-rinse the Decking

Pre-rinse your decking with a garden hose or a pressure washer (on a low setting). This will help to remove any additional dirt that was missed when sweeping.

When using a pressure washer, keep the pressure below 3,000 PSI and use a fan tip nozzle. Hold it at least 8-12 inches away from the deck to avoid damaging the material.

Step 3- Scrub the Decking with Mild Soap

Once you have rinsed the surface, prepare your bucket with warm water and add a few drops of mild soap or composite cleaner.

Then, dip your soft-bristled brush or mop into the soapy mixture and gently start to scrub the surface of the decking. Focus on areas that appear discoloured, gently scrubbing to avoid scratches.

When dealing with grease or food spills, allow the soap to sit for a few minutes on the affected area. This will help to break down the stain before scrubbing. Move the brush in the direction of the grain to get rid of dirt in the grooves.

Step 4- Tackle Stubborn Stains

It can be frustrating to deal with stains that just won’t budge. However, a composite decking cleaner can help overcome this issue.

Apply the cleaner directly to the stain, following any specific product instructions. Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes before scrubbing it into the composite boards.

For challenging areas, use a soft sponge or non-abrasive pad and rinse the area afterwards to remove any residue.

Then, allow the decking to dry, keeping any furniture off the floor until the moisture has fully dried. Replacing your furniture too soon can lead to mould and mildew.

Additional Tips:

  • Avoid bleach and ammonia-based cleaners, as these can damage composite materials.
  • Place pads under outdoor furniture to prevent scuff marks or scratches.
  • Address stains and spills as soon as they happen to prevent long-term damage.
  • You can create your own cleaning solution with vinegar, baking soda, and water.

However, vinegar is acidic, so remember not to leave it on too long!
